Conquering Cancer With Nutrition

There is no question that a good diet is essential for optimal health. We know that the foods we eat, our lifestyle affect our health. Food, nutrition, physical activity and sleep are crucial to our overall health. Our lifestyle choices affect our daily health and our long-term risk of developing diseases such as cancer. There have been scientific research validating the association of poor dietary choices and the onset of degenerative diseases including cancer. The American Institute for Cancer Research estimates that between 60 and 70 percent of all cancers have been directly linked to our daily dietary and lifestyle habits. so with that being said, that means we can make the necessary changes ourselves to avoid those diseases.

One way we can make some small changes is to start reading your food labels and really understand what is in your food. Not only should you be reading  the nutritional facts, but also the actual ingredients. The first 3-5 ingredients will tell you what is primarily in the food.  Things you want to avoid in your food are sugars (they like to sneak in the word organic but sugar is sugar and it's a no-no), also avoid the flours and partially-hydronated fats. 

There is significant research that shows that certain foods should be avoided to prevent cancer but there are also certain foods can offer benefits to someone already afflicted with cancer because they help to treat the condition, bolster immune response or because they can potentiate the effectiveness of other conventional or integrative therapies.

Here are some tips on foods to consume and foods to avoid:

1. Eat your greens, reds, oranges, yellows and purples. A diet rich in plenty of fruits (berries only) and vegetables have been shown to prevent cancer. Eating fruits and vegetables are our most natural and absorbable source for vitamins and minerals.

2. Consume the healthy fats. The types of fat you consume can heal you or put you at risk for chronic diseases. Cancer scientists continue to find cancer-fighting potential in omega-3 fatty acids. They are a type of polyunsaturated fat found mainly in fatty fish like salmon, and in a lesser extent, in certain nuts, seed and oils. Omega-3 is a fatty acid that can help cancer therapies effectiveness. The American Institute of Cancer Research has found that supplementing the diet with omega-3 can reduce occurrence of tumors and can slow tumor growth, reduce side effects of cancer treatments and work more effectively with chemotherapy.

3. Reduce the exposure to pesticides. In the United States, more than 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides and herbicides are sprayed or added to food crops every year. Exposure to these chemicals damage the body's detoxification mechanisms, therefore increasing the risk of getting cancer and other serious diseases.

4. Avoid foods that a "Nutritional Debt". Foods such as refined, high calorie, low nutrient junk food. Foods high in sugars, refined flours, excess sodium, artificial sweeteners, tans or hydrogenated fats, corn syrups and anything deep fried.

5. Select foods that will help detoxify the body. Many common foods found in the grocery store or markets contain cancer-fighting properties, from the antioxidants that neutralize the damage caused by free radicals to the powerful phytochemicals that scientists are just beginning to explore. Blueberries are the king to antioxidants. They are an excellent source of vitamins C & K and dietary fiber.
